Planting flowers in potCertified Volunteer Master Gardener:

To become a certified Master Gardener volunteer, the applicant must:

  • Under go extensive training and pledge 50 hours of volunteer service per year in support of Extension programming.
  • Go to training which is one day a week, 7 hours a day, for 15 weeks.
  • Provide University of Florida research-based information to the public at the Extension office
  • Conduct plant clinics at the county libraries
  • Assist with Extension programs
  • Hold two plant sales and a calendar sale each year
  • Be available to speak to community groups if needed
  • Perform soil pH testing at the Extension office every Wednesday. Samples may be left any day. The $2 charge covers the cost of supplies needed to conduct the testing.

Classes are conducted throughout the year as volunteer opportunities become available at the Citrus County Extension Office. The subjects covered in the training include:

  • botany
  • entomology
  • plant identification
  • plant diseases
  • plant propagation
  • pesticide selection and uses
  • plant selection
  • and much more
