Can I be my own builder?
In most circumstances you may act
as your own contractor subject to statutory limitations. You will
be required to read and sign an Owner/Builder
Disclosure Statement.
How do I get a building permit?
You may obtain an application from
the Citrus County Building Division that will explain in detail
what is needed to secure a building permit. The Application
Checklist is an extremely useful tool in making sure your
application is complete.
What is a site plan?
A site
plan must be drawn to scale, and shows all existing and proposed
structures. Several other items must also be shown, and a list
of these items can be found on our application checklist as well
as in section 104.2.5 of the Citrus County Code.
How do I obtain copies of the codes enforced
within Citrus County?
Copies of the currently adopted
technical codes can be viewed in all County Regional Libraries,
or copies may be purchased through the Southeastern Regional Office
of the Southern Building Code Congress, located in Orlando by
calling (407) 648-9632. The National Electric Code can be purchased
through the National Fire Protection Association by calling 800-344-3555.
What should I look for in hiring a contractor?
You must always be sure that the contractor
you hire is licensed and has proper insurance. This information
can be given over the phone by contacting the Building Division
at 537-5310.
How do I know what inspections I will be needing?
Inspection types will undoubtedly
vary depending on what type of project you are doing. For an example
of some inspection types, specifically for a single family dwelling,
you can review our Inspection Guide Sheet.
What is the penalty for doing construction trades
without a license?
The penalty ranges from a civil citation
to an arrest and prosecution at the State Attorney's. A first offense
violation is a 3rd degree misdemeanor. However, during
a declared emergency the 1st offense violation is a
felony.
