Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Events
The Hazardous Material Section, in conjunction with Citrus County Solid Waste Management,
provide the citizens of the County a free opportunity to safely and properly dispose of their
household hazardous waste.
Twelve chemical disposal events each year are held at the County Landfill located on Highway 44,
Lecanto. The programs are scheduled on different days and different times during the months in
order to meet the needs of all citizens of the County. Additionally, a need was recognized to provide
the outlying communities with a hazardous waste disposal day for their area.
These
community collection events have proven very successful. An abundance of hazardous waste has been
removed from the communities that otherwise might have been managed improperly. Community
Collection Events havebecome very popular. Because of the efforts of the Hazardous Material Section
and team members through their technical expertise of sorting, segregating, categorizing, and
consolidating the chemicals received, the County's cost for disposal continues to decrease.

Please dispose of your hazardous waste properly. One gallon of gasoline improperly dumped on
the ground can render one million gallons of water UNDRINKABLE.
How should you prepare your household hazardous waste for transport to the
collection events?
- If possible, keep the material in the original container with the label intact.
- If you must use a container other than the original, label the container clearly.
- If containers are leaking, place in a larger container with absorbent (kitty litter).
- Separate chemicals. Do Not place all together into a large garbage can. This makes
it very difficult for us to sort the items, in addition to possibly creating a potential
hazardous if incompatible items are accidentally mixed together.
- Cushion glass bottles. Old newspapers can be used.
- Place products into cardboard boxes, lined with newspaper. This will contain any spillage
into the trunk of your vehicle.
- Bring your used motor oil to Recycle Alley. Two gallons of recycled oil can produce enough energy
to power the average home for 24 hours.
