Frequently Asked Questions...
Drinking Water (Potable Water):
Q. Where does Citrus County get its water?
A. There are two major sources of water in the United States, ground
water (wells) and surface water (rivers and lakes). The
Citrus County water comes from the surficial or shallow aquifer
(groundwater).
Q. How is the water treated?
A.
The well water is treated with a lime softening process (to
reduce hardness), filtered (to remove particles) and chlorinated
(to kill bacteria).
Q. Is my water safe?
A. Citrus County Water consistently meets all Federal and State
primary drinking water standards. We continually monitor
the water quality being used both our own in-house, State certified
laboratory and an outside contract laboratory.
Q. Is fluoride added to the Citrus County water supply?
A.
No.
Q. Do I need to buy bottled water for drinking or cooking?
A.
No. Some people prefer bottled water for reasons of taste and
personal preference, especially for drinking and making coffee
or tea but it is not necessary for health or safety.
Q. How can I get my water tested?
A. Citrus County offers water testing at the Environmental Health
Office at the Lecanto Health Department, 3700 W. Sovereign Path,
Lecanto, FL. Environmental Health offers a $10 testing
kit that you fill with your drinking water and return to
their office. They will test it and give you the results.
Q. How can I determine if water or wastewater utilities are available to a property that
I am interested in purchasing?
A.
Call the County's Development
Services Department at (352) 527-5445. They can identify
what utilities are available to serve the property. You can
also look at the maps section of this website to get information
on which utility company serves specific areas of Citrus County.
